Botanical Description:  A large handsome evergreen conifer tree reaching upto 85 m in height, with almost rough black furrowed bark and spreading branches ; shoots dimorphic ; leaves needle like sharp pointed, male cones solitary, cylindric at the ends of the branchlets, female cones solitary at teh ends of branchlets composed of imbricating thin woody placental scales ; seeds pale brown, wings longer than the seeds. The heartwood of deodar is light yellowish brown, turning brown on exposure. It is oily, fragrant, and strong. The flowering & Fruiting is from April to January.

It occurs in Himalayas, Afghanistan, North Baluchistan.

Modern Pharmacological Action: The wood extract is carminative, diaphoretic, antipyretic and has also been used to treat flatulence, pulmonary and urinary disorders, rheumatism, piles and kidney stones. In addition, the bark extract is astringent and is useful for treating fever, diarrhea and dysentery.
