R & D is the brain and backbone of any Pharmaceutical company. With the increasing market competition and quality consciousness among consumers, it is imperative that existing products be further strengthened and new innovative products be introduced at regular intervals.
Vasu Research Centre (VRC), as the R&D Centre of our company is designated, is involved in multifarious activities pertaining to research and innovation in the field of Ayurvedic / Herbal Pharmaceuticals, Phytochemicals and Nutraceuticals, using modern science and technology, without diluting the principles of Ayurveda. VRC was first established on the 26th Feb. 2008 as a research wing of Vasu Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. With a view to expand its research horizon, which is spread across a 9000 sq. ft. area and equipped with the most modern research facilities & backed by highly qualified, skilled & experienced team of scientists from diverse fields like Ayurveda, Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry, Pharmaceutics, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Microbiology. Above all, VRC is awarded with the renowned and prestigious DSIR accreditation for its continuous innovations in products, process, quality and new technologies.
VRC shall strive to perform innovations in the field of herbal drugs and develop Innovative, Effective and Standardized products for mankind by employing latest available technologies.
We shall aim to accelerate and sustain growth by assuring value-based scientific research in Ayurveda, with continual upgradation of knowledge and technical skills of our team.
For carrying out development of different dosage forms like Tablets, Capsules, Liquids, Ointments, Creams, Powders, Gels etc., this laboratory is very well-equipped with necessary lab-scale equipment like Tablet Compression machine, Manual Capsule filling machine, Contra-mixer, Rapid Mixer Granulator, Fluidized bed dryer, Comminuting mill, Tray dryer, Coating pan, High speed Stirrers and Homogenizers, etc.
Due to the complex nature of herbs and more so due to the presence of an array of Phyto-constituents in each herb, their standardization has been a challenge. Since, ayurvedic products are mostly poly-herbal in composition, maintaining quality and consistency becomes all the more challenging. However, VRC is adept in facing such situation due to the presence of highly sophisticated instruments like High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (UV – Spectra), Atomic Absorption Spectra (AAS) from Shimadzu, Japan, High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) from CAMAG, Switzerland as well as Flash Chromatograph from USA. With above instruments and competent Scientists, we are in a position to standardize & validate our formulations through quantitative estimation of active compounds in raw materials and their finished products thereby assuring consistent quality and efficacy.
The presence of heavy metals in Ayurvedic medicines, which has raised a storm in developed countries hampering Export, is quantified in our products with the help of AAS and Mass Digester, and comply as per limits prescribed in WHO guidelines.
Precise quantification of Active phyto-compounds in herbs and their finished products is determined using HPLC and UV-spectra, while GC instrument helps in accurate determination of compounds of volatile nature.
Pure compounds of Natural origin and desired purity, which serve as Reference Standards in quantification in herbs and their finished products, are isolated using Flash Chromatograph, thereby saving lot of time and money.
Microbial contamination in herbal products is another rampant issue, bothering Ayurvedic industries. Due to their natural origin, herbs are usually contaminated with bacteria, fungus and pathogens and it takes a lot of effort and a suitable infrastructure to produce medicines devoid of such harmful contaminants.
The Microbiology department at VRC performs tests and develops suitable methods to identify microbial contamination in raw materials and products. Other major activities include developing in-vitro assay methods for anti-bacterial activity against different micro-organisms responsible for a disease, and conducting Preservative Efficacy Test for evaluating and optimizing the concentration and combination of preservatives in finished products.
It was believed that Ayurvedic products do not have expiry and that the older the medicine, the effective it is. But this is only a myth. At VRC, all products undergo accelerated and real-time stability studies in order to determine their expiry date and these studies are in accordance to ICH guidelines and a set protocol. Every product is exposed to fixed temperature and humidity conditions in stability chambers and withdrawn at periodic intervals for analytical testing of specific parameters.
Accelerated condition : 40 + 20 C temp. and 75 + 5 % Relative humidity
Real time condition : 30 + 20 C temp. and 75 + 5 % Relative humidity
Based on the analytical results and degradation pattern, the product is assigned a shelf-life.
Ayurvedic products have always been regarded as safe for long-term use, and this belief can be regarded true to a great extent, due to their mention in ancient texts and it also being a proven age-old science. However, with changing geographical scenario and to increase acceptance of Ayurvedic products globally, there is a need to generate scientific evidence regarding the clinical efficacy of these products.
VRC has collaborated with many Ayurvedic Hospitals, Colleges and Research Institutes all over India for performing toxicity and clinical studies of its products. Such studies have also been published in reputed National and International Journals.
Regulatory department is basically engaged in preparation of technical documents required for New Product permission & Drug Master File (DMF). Also providing technical support to International regulatory department.
A part from in-house research, we are also encouraging industry-academia collaborative research for providing better platform to research scholar & academic staff. We have MOU with different pharmaceutical institutes for research in Ayurvedic medicine.
