Cinchona succirubra Latin Name: Cinchona succirubra

Indian Name: Cinchona bark

Habitat: India, Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Tanzania, Guatemala, Indonesia and Sri Lanka are the countries where Cinchona is found. In India it is cultivated in Annamalai hills Coimbatore District and Nilgiri Hills in Tamilnadu and Darjling area of West Bengal.
Useful in: The most important alkaloid of cinchona is quinine. The cinchona bark as well as the alkaloids is useful as anti malarias. Quinine is very effective in the treatment of malaria, as it kills the malarial parasites in the blood of humans and in endemic areas has become a prophylactic measure for prevention of malaria.
